Isolation, Love and Vulnerability…Connecting the dots
“We are born alone, we live alone, we die alone. Only through our love and friendship can we create the illusion for the moment that we're not alone.” - Orson Welles
As human beings, we are plagued by an unbridgeable gulf between ourselves and others. No matter how close we get to another person, there remains a fundamental unbridgeable gap. This realization—that we enter existence alone and must depart from it alone—is the essence of existential isolation.
Yet, despite this profound isolation, we are wired for connection. We reach out across the void, seeking to transcend our separateness through love and vulnerability. When we truly bare our souls to another, acknowledging our own fragility, we create a momentary bridge. This act of vulnerability is not a weakness, but the ultimate courage in the face of our existential aloneness.
Love, in this context, is not merely a feeling, but a courageous action. It is the choice to connect, to understand, and to be understood, knowing full well that complete fusion is impossible. It is in this beautiful paradox—that we must accept our ultimate aloneness to truly love another—that the richness of human experience lies.
